authors of the diagnostic criteria for gender dysphoria: we advocated for calling it “gender dysphoria” because “dysphoria” always means “distress” in psychiatry and we wanted it to make sure that no one missed out on the fact that we’re specifically talking about distress with this diagnosis (sci-hub pdf), but just in case that wasn’t enough we also put an additional explicit “distress or impairment” requirement into the final diagnostic criteria for both adults and children, because we think it’s that important that our audience understands that we’re talking about a type of actual dysphoria/distress when we talk about “gender dysphoria.”
